This solar controller prevents harmful overcharging by adjusting the power generated by a solar panel before it reaches your batteries. It uses maximum power point tracking technology to compare solar output to battery voltage and converts that output to an optimal amperage.

Automatic Multistage Charging System

Using a multistage charging system, the controller automatically switches voltages while the battery bank charges. This accelerates the charge, but also helps extend battery life by adjusting the voltage during the different modes. The controller is compatible with multiple battery types and includes a preset charging profile for lead acid batteries.

Charging Modes

  1. Bulk: This mode charges at the full rated load for a quicker recharge time. As the name suggests, this is where the bulk of the charging happens. It typically charges the battery to at least 80% capacity.
  2. Absorption: This mode provides controlled voltage to ensure a full charge. Once the battery reaches between 80% to 90% capacity, the absorption state will kick in and start charging at a regulated voltage. In each charging profile, this mode is set to last for 30 minutes after the bulk charge is completed.
  3. Float: Once the battery reaches full charge, this mode maintains a lower voltage to compensate for self-discharge. This reduces battery stress and minimizes gassing and water loss.

Practical, Convenient Features

This solar controller is constructed with IP68 rated housing that is sealed to resist vibrations, water, and dust. This allows the unit to function properly in a variety of environments.

It also includes several built-in safety features to help protect your equipment. The charging process will shut down if the controller starts to overheat and when an overcurrent, overvoltage, or short circuit is detected. Also, if the battery is wired incorrectly, the red LED indicator will turn on.

How It Installs

The solar controller mounts near the battery. It is wired to the solar panel using MC4 cables. Then, the battery bank is wired to the terminals on the controller. You can also install a fuse or circuit breaker (sold separately) up to 30 amps between the solar controller and battery for additional current protection.

Video Transcript for Review of Go Power Solar Charge Controllers - 20 AMP PWM Solar Charge Controller - GP53FR

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Go Power PWM Solar Charge Controller. This is a 20-amp solar controller that's gonna act as basically, an intermediary between your solar panels and your 12-volt or 24-volt lead-acid batteries. This is going to monitor the power that's coming from your solar panels and adjust that output as it sends that on to your batteries to prevent your batteries from becoming overcharged, which is obviously harmful to your batteries. Depending on your system, this is gonna provide up to 30 volts for your 12-volt system and 50 volts for your 24-volt system. This does use a digital pulse with modulation technology that regulates the panel outputs to provide a nice, consistent charge for your batteries.

It does have an automatic multi-stage charging capacity, so it's going to switch your modes as the battery charges to help extend the battery life. So if your battery is really low, it's gonna go into the bulk mode, so it's gonna give it the full load, help it charge quicker until it reaches about 80% capacity, and then it's gonna switch into the absorption mode which is a little bit more controlled so that you're not gonna overshoot your goal. And it's gonna help to charge that to full capacity, which will then trigger it to go to the float mode. So it's gonna help maintain that full charge. You can see, we do have these three LED indicators here that are gonna help you to monitor your status.

So the green light there is your charge LED. So when that is solid, it means that the battery is connected and it has detected that it is nighttime, so you're not getting that input from your solar panels. If that's flashing, it means that your battery is connected and it is detecting that it's daytime, so you are getting input from those solar panels. If that's off, it means there's no battery detected, so probably aren't connected to a battery. That yellow is gonna be your battery state of charge.

So if that's off, you've got more than 12 volts in your battery. If that is on, it means you have between 11.5 volts and 12 volts. And if it's flashing, it means you have between 11 and 11.5 volts, so you're definitely getting low. You need to make sure that you get it charged. This red one is gonna be your load status display.

So if that is on, it means your high or low voltage disconnect has been detected. If it's flashing, it means your overload or short circuit of load is detected. If it's off, it means everything's working properly. So definitely once you have that green one on and the other two off, or if that yellow one is displaying, then you'll know that you're getting kind of low. This does also offer built-in safety protection for your RV's electrical system, so it's monitoring for your overheating, over current, over voltage, or short circuit. And it is really nice and small, compact, compared to most of the other solar charge controllers I've seen. This is really easy to find a place to mount because it is so small. It's right about four inches long and roughly two and 1/2 inches tall by 3/4 of an inch deep. So it's gonna be very easy to find a place to mount this. They do not include the mounting hardware. You can see, we do have just a couple small holes there that we can put this in place with a screw or something like that. This does have a durable potted construction. So you probably can't see on the underside here but these wires are held in place with a potting material, so you're not gonna have to worry about them coming loose. That potting material kind of holds it tight. That's also going to give it a IP rating of 68, so it's gonna be extremely durable, weather resistant. Although they do recommend that you mount this indoors close to your battery, it is gonna be very durable for you, so you're not gonna have to worry about water, dust, or vibration. That will all hold up well for you over time. So there are some other solar charge controllers out there that have a little bit more bells and whistles. This is kind of just the stripped-down basic version but it's still gonna do a really good job making sure that your solar power is not damaging your batteries. So overall, really nice option to add to your system if you are wanting to use solar power to charge up your batteries. That's gonna complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

This was a replacement controller I installed to allow the solar panels to work with lithium batteries. It works great.

by:

Excellent choice for a single 100w panel mounted on a vehicle. Space is at a premium so this being about the size of a deck of cards and being completely sealed makes it possible to mount in the engine bay. Price is right and I can verify it does exactly what I’d expected keeping 2 Odyssey batteries topped off while running a fridge/lights/charging devices in my 99 Tacoma.

by:

Brought this as a upgrade to my original GP-PWM-30 which did not specifically support a Lithium battery profile. Also for the remote Bluetooth Android App. Looked around for a MPPT solar controller that supported Dual Battery Banks without finding a suitable one. So I want back to this GoPower brand of PWM controller that did. It has performed as expected and the upgrades made seem to have increased the amount of AmpHours drawn from my solar panels by a small amount. I still wish it had been fully upgraded to a MPPT controller.

Ideal for DIY retirees with too much time on their weathered hands. Our RV was prewired. All we had to do was install the controller and solar panel. Ni more utility bills surge as long as the weather plays nice. We highly recommend GoPowr for solar charging on a budget.

by:

My “charger” is still working great

by:

No news is good news. It is functioning as would be expected. The only difference is that I had to change the mounting from horizontal to vertical to accommodate the mounting brackets, other than that it works great

by:

I like your tracking software. The order was delayed because of poor weather conditions in Kansas City but still came to me on the expected date. All was in good condition. I replace the old controller with this updated one and it was a simple install and the whole system works great now. Thanks

etrailer.com is our go-to source for our trailer and motorhome parts and upgrades. We've always been more tha pleased with not only their service and prices but also the quality of the website including the product descriptions and expecially the helpful videos. This most recent purchase, a GoPower Solar Charger is awesome! This is a direct replacement for our failing Speciality Concepts Mark PV Controller. This unit fit perfectly into the existing opening and the mounting screws lined up. This GoPower controller charges the battery bank considerably faster and far more efficiently. Our battery voltage memains higher and the "boost" feature quickly tops off the battery during higher useage. As an added bonus, this is able to charge a secondary battery bank which we use to charge and maintain the engine batteries in our motorhome. Finally, it's easy to use and can handle many battery types including Lithium. What a great value!

This is an upgrade to the original Go-Power Solar Controller that came with my Lance TT. It will easily handle the increased production from the additions of a portable solar generator. The small increase in the backside dimensions forced me to slightly increase the opening to allow it to fit. The screw holes aligned perfectly. Before buying a replacement for your unit that has a malfunctioning display screen, you might try to disconnect the battery then return the power... it might reset for you.

by:

Good quality good price and fast shippi ng.

by:

working like a champ!

by:

This dual bank controller is what every RV needs. It charges the camper first as primary, then charges the chassis starting battery secondary. Never a dead starting battery since. RV sits all winter to full charged batteries in the Spring.

by:

I am disappointed! Contra to the detailed product information that is advertised on your website for this controller, the solar controller unit I received, DOES NOT handle / charge lithium batteries! Like I explained to CS prior to submitting my order, the description of the controller on the website, does not match the actual item being sent and please check it before shipping! So, buyer beware, if you want a controller that will charge lithium batteries DO NOT order/purchase this item from etrailer!

by:

No complaints works as advertised. Good product. Installed in my 27 FB airstream.

by:

This unit replaced the one in my Lance 855S that did not have bluetooth and it has been working great. Based on the odd mounting place that Lance used, this unit is very handy with the bluetooth and pairing it with my phone to show the information that I like to see occasionally such as amps coming in, state of charge, etc. etrailer was very quick with shipping the unit and I would certainly consider them for a future purchase.

by:

This product replaces the original solar controller that didn't have a lithium battery charging profile. All I had to do was switch 4 wires. The new controller has the same dimensions as the old, so no modifications were necessary.

by:

It installed just fine with my set up. After the latest software release, I found it did everything as advertised including the aforementioned Bluetooth connectivity issue in other posts. I had no problems and look forward to camping in my trailer next year with the controller in my rig.

by:

The switch from the non lithium controller to this one was easy. But the controller reads 100% all the time which confused me. I did call Go Power and spoke to someone about that and his reply was that it would always read that. And the best thing would be a battery monitor. Yet another thing to change out or add.

by:

I am not sure about the solar charge controller as I will not use it for some time. Pual B was outstanding to help with the wheel. I realized that I ordered the wrong wheel but then called right back and he helped get the right wheel and get the order out. It was good to be able to talk to someone and your service was very good.

by:

Was quite pleased with this controller and the solar panel that I got through etrailer. This controller has a much more detailed power display than the one it replaced. It was easy to install and was able to hook up 2 solar panels making my dry camping, which makes up about 95% of what I do, much better knowing that my batteries are fully charged.

by:

If you lose the Bluetooth connection you may have to disconnect the wiring. Bluetooth is very sketchy. Go out of its short range without disconnecting and you may have to disconnect the wiring.

by:

Works well. Is very much seamless in its operation . Ocassionally the Bluetooth interface to my iPhone would need to be re established but it seems app updates may have eliminated that issue. With 300 watts of panel it is able to bring two batteries up from 50% charge to full charge in a day and a half during summer. Fit my lance 1172 pickup camper perfectly. Panel knockout and wiring were already in place from factory.

by:

These controllers work great. But etrailer is the hero offering them at better prices & way better customer service than [online options]. etrailer actually answers there phone & have people there who know the products. I'll buy from etrailer from mow on.

by:

This was an easy replacement for a Go Power controller that did not support Lithium batteries. Plus you get Bluetooth. Easy DIY swap. Lithiums are a great improvement
